"The photograph has long been accepted as a stand in for first person experience. We have an expectation that photographic data is deciphered readily, and as such it is increasingly used as a replacement for text or oral communication. We assume a great deal when using photographic images to communicate specific data, when in fact there is a gap between intention and interpretation. My collaged photographs operate within this gap and attempt to call attention to it. Intentionally distorted and interrupted, the photographic data is confused and disparate, and requires the viewer to account for this disparity. Sections of the original data is missing, asking the viewer to replace that information on their own. By extracting pieces of the whole I am interested in questioning how much information is required to create an understanding of not only the reconstituted parts but also the origins of the recontextualized data." - Jeff Heene |
