A new exhibition, opening September 21st at Westland Gallery and on until October 9th, features artists Carol Finkbeiner Thomas, Denise Antaya, and Donna Andreychuk. “This exhibition presents a journey of emotion through landscape, exploring visual language and expression through art both traditional and contemporary in nature,” says Kaitlyn Sun Hwang, employee at Westland Gallery. “Viewers can see each artist’s deep connection to their natural surroundings. Their painting approaches range from hyper-realism to abstract gestural mark making, just as the environment itself varies.” The show will feature both paintings and handmade pottery pieces by Carol Finkbeiner Thomas, Denise Antaya’s high-realism landscape paintings, and select expressionistic paintings by Donna Andreychuk.

Carol Finkbeiner Thomas is a multimedia artist based in London, ON, specializing in painting, drawing, printmaking, and pottery. “Working in oils, Thomas builds up her landscape paintings with strokes of textured colour over loose, freehand drawings resulting in paintings that are intensely atmospheric. Each mark, made by brush or palette knife, carries impressionistic sensibilities,” says Sun Hwang. “Her use of colour, tone, and weight pack each scene with emotion, and set the mood of the piece. The emphasis on mark-making is carried over to Thomas’ pottery in a much more controlled manner, where she uses the sgraffito method to carve and illustrate Ontario’s flora, fauna, and fungi. Whether creating with clay or oil paint, Thomas’ body of work is connected by visible signs of the artist’s hand at work with traditional and non-traditional tools and techniques.”

Denise Antaya is a landscape artist specializing in realism and plein air painting. After a 31-year career in advertising, Antaya changed course to pursue her passion for fine art and has established herself as an accomplished realism painter. “Through her work, Antaya hopes to evoke memories, moments of tranquility and a feeling of being immersed in nature. As a plein air painter, Antaya must become deeply connected with the scenes she observes and studies and she finds endless inspiration in nature and the changing seasons.” Antaya’s current work has been influenced by her recent return to Port Stanley where she lived previously, and she takes great inspiration from rural areas and colourful skies. “A familiar glow carries on through each piece. With light as a primary focus, Antaya reveals the living and moving essence of the landscape.”

Donna Andreychuk is an artist based in Delaware, Ontario, who draws inspiration from her love of the Canadian landscape. “Andreychuk creates her larger works, two of which are seen in this collection, in the studio and employs loose gestural brushstrokes and vibrant colours to capture fragments of her subject. The result is an energetic yet cohesive image with elements of abstract expressionism.” Andreychuk’s work has been featured worldwide in solo and group shows, television programs, and in private and corporate collections.
