Bonnie Parkinson & Kevin Bice
FEBRUARY 16th - MARCH 6, 2021
Many of my works here are landscapes of either London or locations in Italy. European cities are often seen as a richer subject for painting than our own cities however that ignores the rich potential of both locations. Famous cities like Venice are poorly represented if only by their well-known landmarks. To see our own surroundings as uninteresting by comparison ignores our own rich history and subtle beauty. The view up a Cortona street is mirrored in my study of a local alleyway. Both are studies of light on ordinary surfaces. The utilitarian yet elegant lines of the modern Wharncliffe bridge have the same appeal to me as do the exotic – and yes, utilitarian – lines of three Venetian gondolas.
I am very happy to be sharing gallery space with Bonnie for this show. Like my own work, Bonnie’s often celebrates the seemingly everyday. The two of us are also attracted by light – the way it defines objects and mood – whether it is the ancient light of Italy or the fluorescent light of an Ontario coffee shop.
